Interpreting Chromatron Solutions
Chromatron solutions tend to be somewhat obfuscated if you try to decode them on inspection. For example:
1-05-ibOmOQ
doesn't mean much to an everyday reader. If you stare at it long enough, you can probably figure it out, but there are really only two things you need to know:
- The "1" means Chromatron 1.
- The "05" means level 5.
You can actually copy and paste solutions in and out of Chromatron at any time. Just hit Ctrl-C to copy and Ctrl-V to paste. The level layouts are stored as text strings (e.g. 1-05-ibOmOQ). For example, go into a Chromotron level and hit Ctrl-C. Nothing happens. Now, go to a text editor and hit Ctrl-V. Viola! You should see a little text string. You can save that for restoring your level layout later.
To try this, take the level you just copied from and arbitrarily move around a few mirrors. Now, copy the text string from your text editor (make sure not to include any leading or trailing spaces) and Ctrl-V paste it into your Chromatron level. The layout should revert back to what you had copied earlier.
If this didn't work, there are usually a few culprits:
- You copied a leading or trailing space. This is common, esp. since Microsoft products often will copy in a trailing space as a "convenience" if you, say, double click on a word or something.
- You're on the wrong level. If you try to paste a level 5 solution into level 6, for example, nothing happens.
- The text string being pasted is corrupt.
