Chromatron Hints and Solutions

I got hooked on this snazzy game called Chromatron for a few days. The premise is fairly simple; you redirect laser light via a collection of mirrors and other toys. Since I finally finished it, I figured, what the heck, I might as well put some hints and solutions online. If there exists a collection of what I think are radically different solutions, I've shown all of them. I've gotten many additional solutions and comments from some helpful other folks, whom I've credited at the bottom. If you don't know how to read/use the solutions as they're presented, click here.

(Note: Though in general I'm a big fan of vanilla HTML, this page uses some javascript since I wanted everything to fit within a reasonably sized page. If your browser doesn't support such things, there's just a long list at the bottom of the page. I hope you don't mind.)

Gosh darnit, no hints until, at least level 9!

Method 2: 1-08-oniMtg

Method 3: 1-08-iUczIx

Level 9 Hints

I think this is the first moderately challenging level. The red herring is that is you're probably inclined to hit the closest pinwheel right off the bat with a bender. That doesn't work. Try coming back around to get it. Use the conduits to work backwards.

Level 9 Solution

1-09-HHmrpfHjddmP

Level 10 Hints

I got stuck on this for a while, always seeming to be one mirror short. The key, I think, is managing the two corners surrounding pinwheels 6 & 7 while still using only the standard two benders per corner.

Level 10 Solution

Method 1: 1-10-OBNCxtNZbWIZCAhWDOaDnJioyTtKopjjzKuBpk

Method 2: 1-10-ilCACSNZbNbWIZOADOcxyTiDtKoqzvjjuCaDpk

Level 11 Hints

One bender, but both the red and green beams have to go in diagonally! Looks like you'll have to somehow redirect the beams so that both of them use the bender, and then send them at the pinwheels.

Level 11 Solution

1-11-cknYOyyq

Level 12 Hints

This level is deceptively difficult. Here are two hints:
  • The blue beam should be diverted before it hits the blue pinwheel directly in its initial path.
  • You should be seeing some purple beam in the solution despite there not being any purple pinwheels.

Level 12 Solution

1-12-DaPdimOn

Level 13 Hints

Use one splitter for the red pinwheels and one for the blue pinwheels. You should be able to manage using four mirrors+one splitter for the reds and three mirrors+one splitter for the blues.

Level 13 Solution

1-13-JpNKxtbLHniczJnHyx

Level 14 Hints

One of the tips about the white pinwheel is that even after it's lit, you can send another beam (say, a red beam) through it and it won't dim out. For other pinwheels, of course, you can't send non-matching colors through it. That being said, hit the white pinwheel, then work on the other pinwheels. Don't worry if you have to send them through the white pinwheel to get your goals accomplished -- it's okay!

Level 14 Solution

Method 1: 1-14-CYObOisQsYdcxk

Method 2: 1-14-OjsEODsRsWdcxk

Level 15 Hints

The white beam doesn't go through the white flower. Use your splitters and filters to catch all of the primary colors right away, then redirect them to catch the secondary colors.

Level 15 Solution

1-15-HWoItJhNHAcgJnIIDyOx

Level 16 Hints

This one was pretty hard for being just level 16.
  • You've got three benders, but four colors. (The fact that the white beam is an aggregation of all the colors doesn't come into play here.) You'll need all of the beams to move diagonally to hit their targets, so it looks like you're sharing a bender!
  • The impulse solution for the red and blue beams is to use a single bender to redirect them at their appropriate pinwheels. You'll do that for one or the other of these beams, but not both. After all, stuffing the bender in that alleyway prevents you from sharing it.
  • The white beam's bender is not shared.

Level 16 Solution

1-16-ntbuIJINrxsJnxNxnbcM

Level 17 Hints

Try splitting a beam and then reflecting the beam back through the splitter and see what happens. Oh boy!

Level 17 Solution

1-17-niCKJfnHydcNINEhOBrOEkhE

Level 18 Hints

Sending light through a prism lets red light straight through, bends blue 90 degrees, and green 45 degrees. Knowing that, you should be able to determine where you want your prism and where you want the light to come in. Work backwards from there.

Level 18 Solution

1-18-NjcAtyiFCddq

Level 19 Hints

Start off with the splitter. Make some purple beams.

Level 19 Solution

1-19-CZOOrZ

Level 20 Hints

Say, there's a white flower, but no white beams! You'll have to use the prism to make a white beam. You need to send a red straight through, a green at a 45 degree angle, and a blue at a 90 degree angle. Once you get a white beam, send it down the diagonal alley. You may have to sit there and spin the prism around until the beams come out as you like them. There are a variety of solutions.

Level 20 Solution

Method 1: 1-20-MxauCloeNrixBvHQ

Method 2: 1-20-cAlOcyCdJSPxMJEx

Method 3: 1-20-colOIgCdixiFMPJY

Level 21 Hints

Place the prism in a direct path with as many pinwheels as possible (that would be two cyans and a red). Then, remember how prisms reflect light and send the white beams at it appropriately to get the two cyan pinwheels (and the red, for that matter).

Level 21 Solution

1-21-ObsunsMFxA

Level 22 Hints

There are two very different solutions for this level.
  • Method 1: I think this is the easier method.
    • Use the prism and make a white beam similar to level 20. Then, split it and send it into the pinwheels.
    • It looks darn convenient to toss two benders into the pinwheel complex to reflect beams from one flower to the next. That's a red herring -- you only use one.
  • Method 2:
    • Put the prism in the middle. Figure out what direction you need each color to hit the prism to generate the proper white beams.
    • In this example, you do put two benders in the pinwheel complex, so the prism will generate two white beams.

Level 22 Solution

Method 1: 1-22-caiVaOFpoeKebKDebE

Method 2: 1-22-yEpixwiFJQaObEiADe

Level 23 Hints

This is is solved just like you think it should be.

Level 23 Solution

1-23-cnHFIjynclHbcpphypnZoDNUOk

Level 24 Hints

You have three colors and three dopplers. This means one of two things must be true: either you don't need to start with red, or you can not do all of a color at once and you can come back to it later.

Level 24 Solution

1-24-bJmNNtHrOyCouoPIrKmn

Level 25 Hints

You don't need all of the pieces. There are a variety of ways to solve this; three are shown in the solutions.

Level 25 Solution

Method 1: 1-25-hDDJpmeaouIuexFf

Method 2: 1-25-OvDIcAuAoIpeiTht

Method 3: 1-25-IKDHwSHCncnOjQgx

Level 26 Hints

You don't need all the pieces.

Level 26 Solution

1-26-iDGadcnZ

Level 27 Hints

Devilishly tricky. Everything is set up as according to probably your first impulse, but eventually, you need to reflect the quantum tangler beam back onto itself and see what happens.

Level 27 Solution

1-27-HijPuzBvAklQph

Level 28 Hints

The quantum tangler goes where you think it goes. You've got a lot of extra mirrors, which is great for "wasting time" if your quantum entangled beams aren't changing color at the right time.

Level 28 Solution

Method 1: 1-28-MVuKQrjOzTzRzPco

Method 2: 1-28-hGjzDnMVzRzTzPbZ

Level 29 Hints

There's a purple flower, which means you must have two beams overlap at this point. Since you only have 1 source laser, you'll have to split it and then send the pieces back together, playing with the dopplers until you can generate the coloration for the three flowers on the left.

Level 29 Solution

1-29-nylcbryZpeyUxiocclIm

Level 30 Hints

This is a tricky level. You don't need all of the pieces. Just get it so that you hit all the pinwheels and then experiment with the location of the doppler. Try putting it everywhere.

Level 30 Solution

1-30-iAvaixlfye

Level 31 Hints

A bundle of solutions here. You might find it easier if you work on using the joining power of the prism and quantum tangler to create the secondary colors and then send them through the pinwheels (rather than sending two primary colors through a pinwheel from separate directions).

Level 31 Solution

Method 1: 1-31-bZHrovbpgCNg

Method 2: 1-31-ObgrHqglbGmD

Method 3: 1-31-idbfyngyyoHU

Level 32 Hints

Okay, this one is hard.
  • The prism acts similar to the splitter in level 12 -- remember, red goes straight through but blue does not!
  • You'll see a tiny bit of purple beam in the correct solution.
  • This problem involves sending a quantum-entangled beam back on itself.

Level 32 Solution

1-32-BMjktMJdzzCsOS

Level 33 Hints

Brute force. They're all secondary colors, so try to figure out which directions the two lasers that cross the pinwheels will have to go. (For example, you won't be hitting the purple pinwheel on a diagonal.) You may not need as many as perhaps 3 of the pieces.

Level 33 Solution

Method 1: 1-33-FTDksZOnDzhJtNysHUnZGgiRLxxMDHzn

Method 2: 1-33-OBDzOnsZsHOFysprDknZtNiRQLAndrik

Level 34 Hints

Quite a few solutions here. Two are shown.
  • Method 1: Try to hit as many pinwheels as possible with the mirrors to start, then use the splitters to help you.
  • Method 2: Take a look at how puzzle 17 uses splitters and use that to help you.
  • Method 3: elviscub provided another assymetric solution as well.

Level 34 Solution

Method 1: 1-34-cpphDwOEOy

Method 2: 1-34-phbfCqOBNt

Method 3: 1-34-phcpxXOBCo

Level 35 Hints

This is like the inverse of level 30. You'll need to split a white beam and then start dopplering it. I spent some time working on reflecting the beam onto itself and never quite got it that way (in case that's where you are). I did, however, get a note from a clever chap named vignon showing me how to do it while reflecting the beam onto itself.

Level 35 Solution

Method 1: 1-35-MUHYmsxjoXnltjKpunblbf

Method 2: 1-35-wnaDxaaCsesUPsevewexHu

Level 36 Hints

This one is pretty straightforward.

Level 36 Solution

1-36-Fpcnyajzgz

Level 37 Hints

The answer has a whole lot of symmetry here.

Level 37 Solution

1-37-DAhKdbxl

Level 38 Hints

A bundle of solutions. You'll probably have mirrors left over; just try to hit the pinwheels right away. You may not be able to get them all in pairs as they're situated.

Level 38 Solution

Method 1: 1-38-sKCdNyhZNeruOEFYDNdU

Method 2: 1-38-sKBOruNyMPklhKMSDxdU

Level 39 Hints

This one is very hard. There are two archetypes for solutions. Either way, you'll probably have a piece left over.
  • Method 1: Use the splitter right away, then deal with each of the split beams separately, breaking the puzzle down into two separate problems with shared mirrors and shared pinwheels. When I did it this way, I had two benders and a mirror left over.
  • Method 2: Do the reds, then blues, then greens. The splitter plays a very minor role. You may or may not have a piece left over. Probably a lot of shared benders (three to five in the various solutions shown).

Level 39 Solution

Method 1: 1-39-jjvgOVMzhxxggVxKNjCbDNzwPjosunoSHqczxrgO

Method 2a: 1-39-rHjjhxOVGYCbgVxKbaNjfVDNunoszwoSLyxrczoc

Method 2b: 1-39-rHpehxcOGYCbgVxKbaNjfVDNcEzwoGoScvnOxrDW

Level 40 Hints

You don't need all the pieces. Just split the white beam and direct the result at the pinwheels (if needed).

Level 40 Solution

1-40-jZnOODhZ

Level 41 Hints

Given all the black pinwheels, your best bet it to somehow hit both of the red pinwheels along the shared diagonal.

Level 41 Solution

Method 1: 1-41-IDtybZ

Method 2: 1-41-zNiApf

Level 42 Hints

There are multiple solutions here. You have a bevy of splitters, so you may want to use them instead of mirrors if you can do so. You may even have a splitter left over.

Level 42 Solution

Method 1: 1-42-OBrrNxBLiNjttNiTCtPF

Method 2: 1-42-tHrrBLOBiNEHOvjtewNr

Level 43 Hints

I spent a long time on this, but looking at the solution, I have no idea why. No bender sharing or anything. One bender for the greens, and one for the reds. Both colors cross over to the other side and then come back.

Level 43 Solution

1-43-HbormHGZxJcDoDrGOe

Level 44 Hints

Pretty tricky. Have each laser go for its own color on its side, then split the beam with the quantum tangler and use a doppler to send it after the remaing blue and green pinwheels.

Level 44 Solution

1-44-DMHwONgMCetZulgraRyR

Level 45 Hints

This one is pretty hard too.
  • You need to get each color to the other side of the barrier. That means you'll have to use your prisms to send a cyan beam down the middle and split it appropriately on each side.
  • Your laser beams should use all of the conduits. They're hints.

Level 45 Solution

Method 1: 1-45-EwbaxwcSwHuFEvdehgNdyI

Method 2: 1-45-EwxwdepkuFhgbawHilNdda

Level 46 Hints

No shared benders needed. Just do each color separately. If you do share a bender, you can probably save yourself a mirror.

Level 46 Solution

Method 1: 1-46-hNCIbwhuHTNzIRtMevny

Method 2: 1-46-OobwCIhYcnHatMzyoDQK

Level 47 Hints

I think my comment on puzzle 14 is actually useful here. . . Start by bending each beam through a diagonal hole into a side panel. Your first guess as to which beam goes into which side box is probably right.

Level 47 Solution

1-47-coBvxonWDnbUpofVOLaSaoKuFpuzym

Level 48 Hints

Don't get too fancy. Hit both white pinwheels to start and then use the prisms and start worrying about the other pinwheels. It's actually possible to do this with only 1 prism.

Level 48 Solution

Method 1: 1-48-sUyTuEcnphsYmD

Method 2: 1-48-DobYuEcnHqDHsu

Method 3: 1-48-tvCHxyhNNLEvmG

Method 4: 1-48-sqyWNJhLCGFMmU

Level 49 Hints

You don't have to use the teleporter, but the solution that uses the telporter might be easier to come up with. The no-teleporter solution is fairly nonintuitive (i.e. you need to be more clever than I am get it -- I got it from someone else!).

Level 49 Solution

Method 1: 1-49-gEMGMKrsBHDihytHdtHvmR

Method 2: 1-49-BFMGNlrxgCiWiGtHdpdryR

Level 50 Hints

Two radically different solutions. It's fairly challenging just to hit all the pinwheels without worrying about color; your best bet is to do that and then try placing the dopplers later. A lot of solutions that hit all the pinwheels fail because the dopplers don't work, but they're structurally fairly similar Method 1 below.
  • Method 1: No shared benders. The four collinear points are not a red herring.
  • Method 2: Much harder to get, I think. Two shared benders. Other than the initial beam, every beam hits at least one pinwheel before changing direction, but no beam hits more than two. (i.e. the four collinear points are a red herring.)

Level 50 Solution

Method 1: 1-50-NfzwCItOoObuBZnePfxllZDlIw

Method 2: 1-50-CbNiHScQhwxKoEzwDVCZhTwJxM
